A trip to the dentist has become something to look forward to for residents of Fukuyama, a town outside Hiroshima. It’s thanks to Keisuke Maeda of UID Architects, whose new clinic is more Zen retreat than sterile surgery. Squeezed into a long narrow plot, the building’s cedar-clad plywood shell deftly envelops a dental clinic, beauty salon and the architect’s own office -the kind of surreal mixed-programme that can only happen in Japan. Beirut based lighting design studio PSLab has completed another project from its “organic steel factory”, this time for a restaurant in Cairo, Egypt.
Co-founder Dimitri Saddi says the need to “keep the seduction of the local, and its artisans, but use globalisation as an advantage”.
Like the studio’s other projects, the lighting in Tamarai Restaurant has an industrial aesthetic, but every piece shows signs of the hand. Horseshoe-shaped fixtures are supported by a grid of metal beams attached to the ceiling. Painted matt black on the outside, the fixtures allow a slit of light out through a cut in the base of the sphere – but the bronze inner layer adds warmth to this light, creating an expensive-looking glow.

At first sight it looks like parts of giant Panton chairs have invaded the Mumbai store Creo in fashionable Kemps Corner, Mumbai. It is an architectural intervention by local practice Sameep Padora & Associates, designed to create intimate spaces within the 1000sq ft store.
Inspired by the swaying of a woman’s hips on the catwalk, the architectural interior is split over two levels. A wave-shaped structure starts from the ground floor and continues through to the mezzanine level dissecting what would have been a square space into fluid pockets of intimacy.
The structure is made up of a steel frame which was manufactured and bent into shape off site. After installation, resin panels were moulded directly onto the frame. A filler and application of spray paint then created the now-seamless surface.
These continuous curved screens wrap around the clothing in semi-dome shapes, separating specially designed clothing racks within pod-like units. More…

692 discarded oil cans make up the Jugaad pavilion in Delhi by artist and designer Sanjeev Shankar. The pavilion is suspended in the air with pullies “like the ones you use to pull up buckets of water from the well”, says Shankar, and it brings some welcome shade for the inhabitants of the Rajokri district of the Indian capital. Thierry Lasry and Liquid Architecture get together to produce a pair of acetate sunglasses, designed by artist Thomas Lélu. The LA-based Lasry uses the finest Italian materials, handmade in France and are characteristically “futuristic vintage”; retro and avant-guarde at the same time. These aviators are no exception, I would even say they’ve got a splash of 80s inspired color in them too.

For all of the sneakerheads that have been living under a rock, tomorrow marks the release of the second colorway in the Nike Air Yeezy saga. Having seen how hectic the first drop was, we wouldn’t expect anything less from this black/pink release, which is arguably the most highly scouted of the three scheduled colorways. Various spots already have lineups, so this is just a friendly reminder to not miss out on one of the hottest Nike releases of 2009. Trust me this is going to be a hot one, patelism tried last night to get in line with no luck. With one more colorway on the way out next month, if we get a pair there will be a definite unboxing post, stay tuned.

Peter Marigold’s asymmetrical, hand crafted shelving units have been selected for the assembly line of British furniture manufacturer SCP. The Split Boxes came out of the idea that splitting a branch any four ways would still create a 360º whole – an idea that works just as well in mass production. Now called SUM, the set includes three cherrywood units – one small, one medium and one large.
