There is no over-statement here; this is the greatest originally composed score to date. Composed by Clint Mansell & Kronos Quartet who are also known for other great soundtracks like “π (PI)”, “Requiem For A Dream” & the most recent Oscar nominated film “The Wrestler” all films of Darren Aronofsky. First of all words cannot describe this piece of artwork filled with perceptions and beautiful direction that Mansell & Aronofsky have created but patelism.com will give it a try. The soundtrack begins with “The Last Man”; which hooks you with a simple, mysterious piano melody and really takes off when the Kronos Quartet hits the same melody with multiple layers on the strings – this tone will sustain the soundtracks greatness throughout the album. As we get to the 4th track on the soundtrack “Stay With Me” we are able to understand the ingenious composition that Clint Mansell can bring to any track, it is sublimely reflective -by which a sense of beauty and resonance develop -from that thoughtful but free willed expression, a desperate affinity devours the soul. Like “Tree of Life” the 7th track on the album “First Snow” best illustrates the haunting beauty of the film & the dark allure to follow. The film’s final scene ends with possibly the greatest composed single track ever “Death is The Road to Awe”. This 8 minute track becomes three dimensional, soaring through various levels of emotion -of yearning, love and isolation within an infinite universe as displayed perfectly in the film. The delayed movie climax blooms in the triumphant chorale and explosively soaring composition. Mansell sticks to simplicity, with a sort of ambient melody played with classical instrumentation. He layers plenty of shimmering strings and rippling piano’s into a sweeping web, & adds in some electronic sounds & some tribal drums for atmosphere. Check out the soundtrack & video’s below, enjoy.
